Credit Union breaks ground on new location America’s Credit Union is pleased to announce that by the end of the year, Fort Lewis will have its third credit union branch location. The groundbreaking ceremony took place April 9, on North Fort, next door to the AAFES mini mall on A Street. This new branch will be fully staffed, Monday through Friday with the possibility of Saturday hours in the future. ACU is a leader in providing electronic services with in-lobby computer access complete with online banking and Bill Pay. This not-for-profit credit union was established in 1954 to serve the military. Since then, ACU has grown within the communities surrounding Fort Lewis with eight branches from Lacey to South Tacoma. It serves approximately 34,000 members and has assets over $333 million. Share deposits are fully insured to at least $250,000 by the National Credit Union Administration. Unlike most other financial institutions, credit unions do not issue stock or pay dividends to outside stockholders. Instead, earnings are returned to members in the form of lower loan rates, higher interest on deposits, and lower fees.
