From the official website at
http://www.chloeclarkstatue.com:
Chloe Clark was the first school teacher to come to
DuPont and the entire Puget Sound region. Originally from Connecticut,
this well-educated, single woman sailed from New England to the Hudson
Bay Company's Fort Vancouver on the Columbia River and then overland to
its trading post at Ft. Nisqually (on the site of present-day DuPont).
Chloe was 22 years old when she arrived on July 10, 1840. This mission
school was built a short distance from Ft. Nisqually. It was Chloe's
mission to provide education to the Native American Children.
This past October a group of volunteers from Steilacoom Historical
School District No. 1 formed the Chloe Clark Memorial Committee to raise
funds to erect a picturesque memorial to this woman. The statue will be
placed on the school grounds at the corner of Palisade Boulevard and
Haskell Street, in DuPont, Washington. This will give the public full,
unrestricted view of the site.
The memorial consists of a slightly larger-than-life, bronze statue
showing Chloe in period clothing, holding a school bell and a book. The
statue will be placed beneath a stylized version of that early mission
school. Commemorative plaques, telling Chloe's story and recognizing
donors will be placed at the site.
