DuPont, WA: Welcoming for over 5,000 years

DuPont can trace its history back over 5,000 years from the Nisqually Tribe that once populated this area where modern day DuPont resides. Several artifacts dating back this far, including Chief Seattle's fishing pole, are on display in the town's Museum which was once the town's butcher shop and later City Hall.

The vision for Northwest Landing was to create an urban village where economically diverse residents could walk or bike to local restaurants, shops and nearby workplaces, such as Intel Corp., State Farm Insurance, Fort Lewis, or Venture Bank.

The quaint city of DuPont started as a company town with over one hundred houses, a butcher shop and a hotel, built by explosives manufacturer E.I du Pont de Nemours Co. in 1906. The residents were allowed to purchase their homes in 1951, at which time the city was incorporated.

Some of the residents that still live in DuPont were former workers at the DuPont Powderworks Plant stand as a testimony of the appeal of the area to stay here even though the plant no longer exists. Ironically, homes that are being built in DuPont (and across America) utilize a whole house wrap TyVek (R) material designed by the DuPont company and the original powerworks site still exists in some form as the new golf course design was incorporated into some of the original structures. Even more amazing is that within the area of The Home Course Golf Course you can see the original historical 1833 site of Fort Nisqually and the infamous Wilkes Observatory in "The Back 9". The City of DuPont currently has a population of just over 7,500 resident since a steady population of 384 between 1909 and 1970, most of which are military. The area known as the Historic Village was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1987. DuPont City Hall was once a general store, and its cupola is from Laughbon High School, which was once part of the DuPont School District.

DuPont's charming small-town character, tree-lined streets and distinctive Craftsman-style architecture have all been incorporated into Northwest Landing's design, a point that has sold many new homeowners. Northwest Landing's homes emphasize porches rather than garages. Today's home buyers want more than a house. They want a neighborhood where they can put down roots. They want to feel connected to their neighbors and participate in their community.

Northwest Landing is an award winning 3,000-acre mixed use planned community located in the City of DuPont, Washington. Land uses include industrial, office and commercial development, homes, schools, parks, open space and trails. There are nearly 30 miles of paved trails winding in and out of the numerous neighborhoods. It incorporates 1,000 acres of residential neighborhoods, 1,000 acres of open space with 1,000 acres zoned for commercial/industrial use.

Rather than having a series of suburban subdivisions and unrelated office and industrial parks, Northwest Landing was planned from the outset to grow into a cohesive community. Master planning requires a regional vision where the "part" becomes a piece of the "whole."

DuPont continues to grow, but will never grow beyond the boundaries of nature and the governmental land surrounding it, thus keeping it isolated from urban overgrowth in nearby towns.

About DuPontWA.com
This website was started by DuPont resident Mike Culley back in July 2005.  After living in DuPont for just over a year it was difficult to find one source residents could turn to that had all the news, event information and other community related services in one place.  The City of DuPont has a website and a newsletter, as does the Northwest Landing Owner's Association .  Though there is also a local newspaper, it only comes out once per month too.  With so many sources of information in town, the need to compile all of this information into one place was needed and DuPontWA.com fills that need. The website has a wealth of information about DuPont and links to popular websites of interest to its residents.

Over the past few years, more and more information and services have been added including dynamic Classifieds, a Local Business Directory with more information pages, and the enormously popular Rumor Mill. The website has been used previously to advertise DuPont businesses, including Mike's own businesses, but has since shut down those services due to conflicts Mike had trying to be in compliance with the City and the State.  The site now operates as an informative and interactive guide where its content is controlled mainly by the site visitors themselves.  Operational costs to keep the site going depend on donations and users visiting any of the sponsored links which come from Yahoo.

I hope that you enjoy coming to DuPont whether for a day trip, a three year tour, or to settle down and make roots.  You can depend on this website to be the best source of information about what is going on in DuPont and have as much accurate information as possible.  Remember that the site is controlled by a human, and humans can make mistakes.  If you see an error in information or links, please report it.
